Why does the Darlington Community host an annual Fiesta?

As the number of Hispanic immigrants began to grow and prosper in Lafayette County, several community members saw an increasing need to recognize the contributions this population was bringing to Darlington. A committee was formed and members agreed that a Cinco de Mayo celebration was an excellent opportunity for the Hispanic and Anglo communities to come together in a positive way.

The first annual fiesta, held on May 5th, 2007, was a huge success. The number of volunteers, sponsors and participants has continued to grow ever since, signifying the positive impact this event has had on the Darlington area.

So why Cinco de Mayo? The fiesta itself isn’t really a celebration of Mexico’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862; which is truly why Cinco de Mayo is recognized in Mexican history. More than just a party, the fiesta has become a way for the people of Darlington to showcase the rich culture that has been brought here by it’s newest members. The Hispanic immigrants living and working in Lafayette County are from many different Latin American countries including Mexico, Honduras, Argentina, Peru & Uruguay. Cinco de Mayo ~ Fiesta Latina is really a celebration of the diversity that is flourishing in our small, rural community.
